A while ago, I asked our fans at My Family Home what their sofa preferences were. People gave all sorts of preferences, from the number of seats to the shape of the arms. It turns out sofa details matter!
In this blog, I’m going to distil for you the results from this poll and add my own suggestions in this express guide to choosing the right details to please the people in your life with your sofa.
THE MORE SEATS, THE BETTER
Large sofas are in fashion. They’re also immensely practical, as they provide plenty of room not just for the ordinary inhabitants of your home (including pets), but also guests that you might host.
CHANGEABLE CHAISE OR OTTOMAN
This is a must. Whether it’s to put your feet up after a hard day’s work, or simply an emergency seat when everyone in the neighbourhood has been invited to your home, you’ll soon be wondering how you ever coped without one.
LARGE PROPORTIONS
Less isn’t always more. It turns out that people generally prefer sofas that are generously sized, whether to give them more personal space or simply to (again) fit more people in the living area when needed.
ROUND SOFA ARMS
These tend to be more popular than flat sofa arms. This isn’t necessarily just an aesthetic preference; it also tends to be the preference of people who nap, as it’s more comfy to rest your head on a rounded surface than a harder edge.
TAKE CARE WITH SEAT DEPTH
Know who’s going to be sitting in your sofa. If you’re smaller or you find yourself struggling to get out of some sofas, it may be because the seat is too deep for you. If you’re bigger, however, a smaller seat depth may be a bit uncomfortable. Unsure what would suit you? We recommend just going with a standard seat depth.
Happy sofa shopping!
