At 1825 Interiors, we specialise in furnishings for the family home. As professional home-decorating fanatics, we naturally love homewares of all shapes and sizes. We know we’re not supposed to play favourites but, still, we’d be lying if we didn’t admit mirrors hold a special place in our hearts—especially dining room mirrors! Not only can a single mirror brighten a room (especially when positioned opposite a window), but it can also make a room appear larger—no pricey home renovations required! When it comes to mirrors, there is such a thing as a ‘right’ choice—and there is an art to how best to hang one. Whether you’re investing in hallway mirrors or dining room mirrors, read on to discover our best tips and tricks.

Firstly, when hanging a mirror, a great rule of thumb is to ensure the mirror’s centre is 150 centimetres from the floor. This is a good way to ensure that people walking by or standing in front of the mirror can see themselves. It’s also important to make sure that the width of the mirror is smaller than the width of furniture positioned below it. How much smaller? Well, a mirror that’s two-thirds the size (or a tiny bit wider) of the piece of furniture below it will look fabulous almost every time. In this instance, size will be relative. Dining room mirrors, for example, will have different dimensions to bathroom mirrors.

When deciding which style of mirror will best complement your home, keep one word in mind: balance. Rather than keeping things matchy-matchy, search for a mirror in a style that will balance out the pieces around it. For instance, if you have an ornate hall or console table, a clean-lined mirror can be a gorgeous choice. On the other hand, a mirror with a rustic timber frame would look great above a contemporary sofa setting.

Most of our beautiful mirrors can be hung either portrait or landscape style with the aid of a two-part rail on the back. We’ve even made instructional videos to give you a step-by-step guide to hanging mirrors on both masonry and plasterboard walls.
