How To Style A Master Bedroom

How To Style A Master Bedroom

Human beings spend roughly 30% of their lives asleep. In case you’re wondering, that adds up to around 220,000 hours (or 26 years).

We don’t know about you, but those numbers alone motivated us to put a little more effort into redecorating our bedrooms so that they may become the stylish sanctuary they deserve to be. And, while we’re at it, we figured we’d compile some of our favourite ideas for achieving exactly that.

BACK TO BASICS

With any redecorating project, it’s tempting to get caught up in all fun details right off the bat. However, the best way to avoid regrets down the road is to begin by taking a look at your canvas – which, in this case, is your bedroom walls.

Given bedrooms are meant to be places of rest, the most important thing to consider here is what colours, textures, or prints you personally find soothing. Many of us, for example, will tend to find bold, bright, and/or dark colours and patterns overstimulating – thus making them a poor choice for our bedroom walls.

On the other hand, some people may find white or neutral walls so contrary to their personality that they find it hard to relax (because the space doesn’t feel like theirs).

The bottom line? How you paint or paper your bedroom walls is totally up to you and should reflect whatever helps you (and your partner) feel at ease.

FABULOUS FURNISHINGS

And now for the fun part: the furniture!

As you’d expect in a bedroom, the bed is meant to be the star of the show. Regardless of whether you’re a cushions-galore type of person or a functional-pillows-only type of person, the goal is always to make your bed look and feel as inviting as possible. If 14 pillows and the fluffiest throw blanket the world has ever seen is what that looks like to you, go for it. However, if you like things simple, take the time to make sure the details (like the texture of your sheets and pillowcases, or the weight of your duvet) are really working for you – with less going on, the small things are more likely to stand out to your senses.

The next thing on most people’s lists is bedside tables. Don’t feel restricted to shopping in the bedroom section for this one – you might find a great lamp table or even a stool that functions perfectly well in the bedroom and is exactly your style.

Another essential piece of furniture (unless you’re lucky enough to have an enormous wardrobe) is a chest of drawers. Many of our customers like to coordinate their dresser with either their bed frame or bedside tables (usually within the same furniture collection), but that’s not to say that the bedroom styling gods will come after you if go for a more eclectic look – it’s all up to you!

DELIGHTFUL DETAILS

Here’s your opportunity to really let your uniqueness shine through.

The final touches are what will tie the whole room together and you’ll know you’ve got it right when you can stand back, look around the whole space, and think to yourself, “This feels like me.”

In our opinion, the best and fastest way to achieve this is to focus your attention on creating vignettes on your chest of drawers and bedside tables (as well as any other shelving you might have in your space).

The golden rule here is to have an absolutely zero-tolerance policy for clutter. Whether we consciously notice it or not, physical clutter so often translates to mental clutter – making a good night’s sleep more of a challenge than it needs to be.

Once that’s taken care of, you’re free to arrange pieces like photo frames, lamps, ceramics, books, and house plants into little groups (vignettes). Keep in mind that there’s a real art to this, and most of us don’t get it “right” the first time. The trick is to keep arranging and rearranging – swapping individual items out as required – until your vignette looks balanced and complete.
